Historique :	Provenant de l'ancienne église des Cordeliers, ce tableau compte parmi les réalisations comtoises les plus significatives du XVIIe siècle. Sur un fond d'architecture agrémenté d'un paysage, Jésus et Marie dominent la scène tandis que trois saints sont figurés au bas de la composition : Jean-Baptiste, Charles Borromée et Bonaventure. Avec cette peinture ambitieuse, Rately (1611-1653), qui avait séjourné à Rome vers 1630, montre à quel point il avait assimilé les leçons de l'art italien. La mise en perspective du cadre architectural, l'élégance des attitudes, le raffinement apporté au rendu des costumes et des matières en fournissent les preuves. Cette Vierge aux saints et un Martyre de sainte Ursule conservé dans l'église de Chassagne-Saint-Denis (Doubs), sont les seuls tableaux recensés de ce peintre dont la carrière se déroual vraisemblablement sur plus de vingt ans. En 1644, Rately prononça ses voeux sous le nom de frère Prothade chez les Capucins de Salins où il mourut neuf années plus tard, sans que l'on sache s'il avait durant ce laps de temps poursuivit ou abandonné son travail artistique.
