Historique :	Cette oeuvre est un des rares grands tableaux religieux conçus par Lancrenon (1794-1874) au début des années 1840 à une époque où ses responsabilités en tant que directeur-conservateur du musée des Beaux-Arts de Besançon, conjuguées à celles de professeur à l'école des Beaux-Arts ne lui laissaient que peu de temps pour mener à bien des travaux aussi conséquents.L'iconographie choisie, l'Apothéose de sainte Philomène élevée au ciel par des angelots tenant dans leurs mains les instruments de son martyre, notamment l'ancre avec laquelle elle aurait été jetée dans le Tibre, est servie par des coloris clairs, une lumière fine et cristalline qui donnent lieu à une image radieuse. En réalité, cette prétendue sainte n'a pas existé, sa légende créée de toutes pièces au XIXe s. a été depuis rejetée par l'Eglise catholique. (source Brochure Ville de Besançon 2010).
